The aim is to help the family or informal caregiver to manage looking after the patient and understand the condition.
The psycho-education for the family/caregiver can include information such as:
- Information about the illness and what may be the patient’s reactions to the diagnosis. How family can deal with these
- What changes to the patient’s psychology this diagnosis will bring?
- What are the symptoms of the illness and how the family can manage them
- What type of treatment the patient will receive, why the specific treatment, what are the side-effects, how can they manage them, when the patient will be receiving the treatment
- Support to the family for better coping and adjustment and reduced anxiety, stress and depression.
